The Status of Sattapaṇḍa, Lanna Worship Objects of the Tai Yuan People in Myawaddy, Kayin State, Republic of the Union of Myanmar

Abstract

This article examines the role of the Sattapaṇḍa within the Tai Yai community of Myawaddy, which serves both as a ritual offering and a symbol of Lanna cultural identity. The study focuses on three main aspects: 1) the characteristics of the Sattapaṇḍa in Buddhist practice, 2) the forms of Sattapaṇḍa within the Tai Yai community, and 3) the contextual usage of the Sattapaṇḍa. The research employs a framework of cultural heritage management combined with observations and in-terviews. The findings reveal that: 1) Most Sattapaṇḍa are triangular in shape, made from carved wood, lacquered and gilded, adorned with colored glass, and retain traditional designs without alteration in accordance with Myanmarís art styles; 2) The contextual use of the Sattapaṇḍa remains as a ritual offering and a cultural symbol that expresses the identity of the Tai Yai community in Karen State; 3) The preservation of Sattapaṇḍa emphasizes maintenance according to their usage conditions. The article proposes conservation strategies for Sattapaṇḍa that align with the Tai Yai social context through the management of transmitters, users, and caretakers, as well as the creation of learning spaces and conservation networks, to raise community awareness of the value of Sattapaṇḍa and ensure their systematic, stable, and sustainable preservation.
